Chapter Sixteen

I rolled my eyes. Not only had Brik taken over my investigation, but now he was prefacing his findings for dramatic effect? That was Hyperion’s job. And it was super irritating when he did it. “I’m waiting with bated breath.”

“I found—”

Hyperion flung open the cabin door, narrowly missing Brik’s shoulder. “Are you ready for this? We just passed Fraser and Daiyu in the woods.” He strode inside. A white moth trailed erratically behind him.

Razzzor knocked on the door frame. “Mind if we come in?”

Brik motioned him inside with a resigned air. “You’re going to anyway.” The moth battened against a checked lamp beside the couch.

“What were those two doing wandering around your cabin?” Hyperion asked. “Because to me it looked totally sus.”

I sat on the long bench, my back to the table. “We called the front desk to report a break-in. They came to investigate.”

“Hyperion told me about the break-in.” Razzzor sat beside me on the bench. “Was anything taken?”

“Nothing obvious,” I said. “And I saw Daiyu going through Brik’s tools at the beach house earlier.”

“You think she did it?” Hyperion dropped onto the couch and pivoted into a horizontal position. He cradled his head with his hands and crossed his ankles over one couch arm.

“I don’t know what to think.” But Daiyu was definitely a snoop. I scuffed the throw rug with the heel of my shoe.

“I think I know who was following us tonight.” Brik dug into the front pocket of his jeans and pulled out a slim black piece of plastic. He tossed it onto the table.

Razzzor and I swiveled on the bench to look. It was a name tag. Daiyu’s.

I stared at it. Had Daiyu been wearing the tag at the party? I didn’t think she had been, but I couldn’t be sure. “Where did you find it?” I asked him.

“On the trail above the cabin, near a big redwood.”

“Are there any small redwoods?” Hyperion asked.

“This one was especially big,” Brik said. “But I didn’t see anyone around.”

The moth thudded into the lampshade. Getting no love from that quarter, it meandered into the kitchenette.

“It sounded like someone was following us,” I explained to the others. “Brik went back to see if he could catch them.” The men nodded, as if my sitting around haplessly while Brik braved a creeptastic forest was totally normal.

“The dropped nametag could have an innocent explanation.” Razzzor adjusted his glasses.

“It takes ten minutes, speed walking, to get from the main campus to this cabin.” I braced my elbow on the long table behind me. “Fraser and Daiyu got here in five, tops. They were both nearby when we made the call. How did you two get here so fast?”

“We were already on our way,” Razzzor said.

Hyperion made looping motions with one hand above his head. “Never underestimate a gay man with a Tarot deck. I had a premonition.”

Brik snorted.

My partner sat up on the couch. “All right. I was bored and wanted to know what you two’d found out.”

That explanation was more realistic.
